“When You Fail to Plan, You Plan to Fail.” Here are the most common reasons your video marketing campaign failed.
As you are planning your own video marketing campaign, set yourself up for success. Many people use online video to successfully promote their Tourism Destination. But many fail too.
Making a video just to make a video
Video marketing is great. And while advice from the experts is top, I have a list of everything that can go wrong and will. Marketing can make or break your digital media content.
It does not matter how good the content is if you fail to get users to watch past those first few seconds; no one will see the gold that lies further in.
It is no secret that companies often shell out eye-watering amounts on production and air-time for their video campaigns. However, is not to say that they are always a success.
Many go a step further by completely bombing and losing millions in investments. Hera are some of the biggest video marketing campaign failures in recent years in the hope that you will learn from their mistakes.
Most Common Video Marketing Mistakes
Creating strong video content for your business is a good way to reach a variety of markets and engage your audience. As the founder of a company that produces video content for some larger-than-life brands (ranging from RedBull to Coca-Cola), I can tell you that video is a very effective marketing tool when done well. However, more often than not, the videos I see startups and small businesses producing are done so poorly that they often end up doing more harm than good.
In the eyes of the consumer, your video is a reflection of your brand. To help you get off on the right foot with your video marketing strategy, here are the top 10 mistakes in video marketing that I commonly see businesses making — as well as tips for how you can avoid them.
Mistake: Making a video just to make a video
When you fail to make a plan, you plan to fail. That saying applies to life and video marketing. Does your video serve a higher strategic purpose? Is it branding you? Why are you making it? If you don’t know the answer, take a step a back.
Mistake: Not branding correctly
Hearing someone recall your video is fantastic. But if they can’t remember the name of your company, it’s considered a fail. Many times we get so wrapped in the making of the video that we forget its actual purpose: communicating the benefits of and promoting your business.
The Fix: Brand your video with your logo, website URL, or another piece of your identity — especially in the beginning. Here’s an example of a well-branded dental practice showcase video from one of our clients.
Mistake: Making your video too long
How long was the last online video you watched? Thirty seconds? Maybe two minutes? Research shows that 20 percent of people click away from a video within the first 10 seconds if it isn’t engaging enough. Plus, the more time you add to a video, the less likely people are to finish watching it.
Mistake: Not focusing on a single message
Here is a hypothetical: You just watched an online video for a company that talks about its new product, its heritage, a new location, stellar employees, business awards, recent philanthropic endeavor, personal message from the CEO and a new rewards program. What did you learn?
Mistake: Not calling out your call to action
“Visit our website.” “Give us a call.” “Follow us on our social media outlets.”
Did you include something like this in your video? If you leave your viewers in the lurch, they’ll be unsure of the next step to take — and you just lost a valuable lead, sale or click.
Mistake: Failing to use SEO for your video
Getting your audience to see your video online is crucial. Just posting it on YouTube isn’t enough anymore. There are specific tactics and techniques that can drive web traffic to your site and video, and rank your site as number one in search results.
Mistake: Expecting instant results
Rome was not built in a day. This same mantra can be applied to video marketing. Very rarely do videos go viral. And when they do, most of the time it’s because of an established social media presence.
Mistake: Improper placement of selling points
Waiting until the end of your video to convey your selling points is dangerous. The longer a video is, the faster viewer engagement drops (see Mistake #8). As in journalism, put the juicy bits in the beginning and follow them with supporting details.
Mistake: Failing to address your target audience
Sure, you have products and services that can benefit a wide audience. However, your video will be more effective if you focus on one point and don’t cast too wide a net. Different people have different pain points. You need to decide which ones you want to address. Remember, when you try to speak to everyone, you speak to no one.
Mistake: Choosing the wrong partner or producer
Your viewers and potential customers are very subjective. They will be critical of the quality of your video and equate it to the quality of your business. Sure, anyone can use a smartphone to make a video, but is that how you want people to see your brand? And if you hire outside talent or an agency to produce the video, does the partner you’re working with know about your industry or understand the market? Ask a lot of questions to get the answers you need. After that, it’s time decide if your video partner can produce something that reflects the quality of your company — or part ways.
Video marketing can be effective for any entrepreneur; however it requires appropriate execution and resources. Sometimes even the best-planned videos don’t get the expected results. Below we have mentioned the 7 most common reasons for video marketing failures.
The Message is not Explicit.
With the massive amount of marketing content that the average person is exposed to on a daily basis, clarity is imperative to get your message across. You must first understand what the goal of your marketing video is in order to craft the message. Next you must understand whom exactly your sending that message to.
Your Video is not in Sync With the Kind of Customers You Target.
Even if you hire professionals for your corporate video production and direct huge amounts towards your marketing budget, it’s going to be futile if you don’t know who your customers are and what type of media makes an impact on them. Rap music and flash edits aren’t going to work if you’re selling retirement home spots and you wouldn’t choose Nickelodeon as the channel to advertise your malt liquor commercial. You need to be sure that your target audience can connect with the video but first you must know who your target audience is; otherwise all your time and money would be spent in vein.
Lack of Pre-Production Planning
Before you get started with shooting and editing a marketing video, everything has to be already complete on paper. Without thorough pre-production (scripting, story boards), the filming and post production process will be confusing and time consuming and the final product will suffer. You can save money by completing this process yourself or you can put it on the production company. Either way, this crucial first step can’t be ignored.
Substandard Production and Editing
If your video has corny visual effects, bad audio, or mediocre content, it will be visible to your viewers. This field is very competitive and viewers have come to expect top quality media from marketing videos. Don’t be the company that sticks out for the wrong reasons. A good example of this (or rather a bad example) is the video included in this post, which incorporates the tri-fecta of corny visual effects, bad audio AND mediocre content, and the video shows.
Your Video Lacks Sufficient Promotion and Advertising.
Your end product needs to be promoted well to get to your target viewers. Even the best videos could go unnoticed if they lack advertising. You need to reach out to various platforms (Youtube, DailyMotion, Metacafe, TubeMogul etc.) where you can attract your potential customers. Don’t just sit back after your video is done and wait for results.
“When You Fail to Plan, You Plan to Fail.” So, You Want to Start Making Videos As a marketing medium, video is great.
Those viewing video are more likely to book then those who do not. Video viewing influences buying behavior.
Who is your target audience?
What buyer persona are you targeting? This may be a segment of your destination typical traveler persona.
What is the goal?
Increase brand awareness? Sell more event a new product? Ultimately, what do you want your audience to do after watching the video?
Where is the video going to be used?
Behind a landing page form? Re-purposing videos for other channels is great, but you should begin with one target location in mind where you know your audience will discover the video.
When is the due date?
What is the timeline. A video you have a few months to work on will have very a different budget and creative scope than a video someone needed yesterday.
